Artist’s Note: This table was created for the inaugural Chi-Town Chess: Englewood Open tournament, held at the We Grow Chicago Nature Park in the summer of 2022. The chess festival placed the Englewood neighborhood at the center of the chess world in Chicago for one glorious weekend and brought people of all ages and abilities together to play, mentor, learn, and compete. For the tournament, woodworker and Englewood native Vernon Herrion and artist Erik Peterson built ten handcrafted chess tables and twenty stools from reclaimed lumber from Chicago’s recently renovated Lathrop Homes public housing project, diverting trees from the wood chipper to be recycled into beautiful, functional art objects. For ART-IN-PLACE 2022, the artists returned the table to the grounds of Lathrop Homes, where the trees from which it was built originally grew.
ART-IN-PLACE is organized by CNL Productions and Terrain Exhibitions.
