Artist’s Note: While initially responding to the uprising in Syria, this message is still relevant (think Ukraine or racially motivated violence). These two young women were standing around with machine guns having what looked like a casual conversation, and my heart was breaking at their situation with me half a world away simply by luck of birth. All I could do was paint them with tenderness and care while removing the guns. Same with racially motivated violence—I am not a target just by luck of birth. The most important conversations I can have are with other white people about why we are the ones that need to change.
